It's not just about working on rap beats that you like best, or that are your favorite, you have to work with beats that are outside the box for you. The problem with only working on beats of this nature comes in two forms and both of them can be deadly to your career as they tend to both restrict development as a budding rapper and also to make your best showing not so bright as it should be. For these reasons which I go into in greater detail below, you have to do your best to step outside the box and at least practice with beats that are not within your general comfort zone. By doing this you can improve in ways you'd never imagine.

But first things first. There are two reasons why only working with rap beats that you think you like can really hinder your advancement as a rapper. The first is that by rapping only to your favorite beats, or to rap beats you like to hear you are not necessarily working with beats that are best suited to your style. If you have ever watched the show American Idol you'll know what &I mean here, but if you haven't you should still be able to understand. On American Idol the singers often pick their own music to sing to. And you see a definite problem when they chose songs by artists that they love because even though they love these songs they are actually no good at singing to them. In this way the singer had it in their head that they loved a certain artist, but unfortunately that artist had a style that was not actually good for them. The judges on the show always tell the singer that they were working outside of their style, and this can be confusing for some singers when they think that their style is necessarily what they like to listen to on the radio. It's not. 

Just because you like to listen to something doesn't mean that you will sound good when you rap to it. Rap beats are tricky this way, and it's often hard to decide what is the best beat for you to rap on, but you always have to forget about what your preferences are musically and go with the rap beat that you can work best with. You will always sound better.

The other reason that you should get away from rap beats that you love is because this can offer you a chance for growth. So many people get stuck in the same rut of creation and the reason that this happens is that they so often just go with what they know. You can't allow yourself to get stuck in a rut with the same old rap beats, and the way to avoid this pitfall is to try to put down tracks to different styles of rap beats. You may not come out with a track that anyone would want to hear, but the effort you put in to trying to understand the different style of rap beats will help you improve.
